JV and Varsity Pre-Tryout Practices

  • Practice before tryouts are an opportunity to practice and build their skills prior to tryouts.
  • Family ID must be completed before any player can practice or tryout.
  • JV and Varsity practices will begin from 3:30 to 6pm on Tues Aug 7 to Thu Aug 9th and Mon Aug 13 to Wed Aug 15.

Women's Varsity Volleyball Tryout Info:

  • No Varsity roster spots are guaranteed, even if you were on Varsity the previous season.
  • CIF/NCS allows for the first official day of tryouts and practices to be on July 30, 2018.  That is far in advance of the first day of school.
  • Encinal Varsity will begin having workouts as early as Mon Aug 6th.  The schedule is TBD.
  • Encinal Varsity tryouts are currently scheduled for Mon Aug 13 to Wed Aug 15th, 3:30-6pm.  There will be a Varsity scrimmage Thu Aug 16 from 3-5pm.  (No practice Fri Aug 17th)
  • Although we want to have a championship program, as a teacher and a father myself, I understand that vacation time with family can be hard to come by.  The expectation for Varsity players is that if they are in town, they should be coming to workouts and tryouts.  If you cannot make it, please be sure to let Coach Chen know.  The key is communication.

  • Freshmen are able to tryout for Varsity, especially if you have some club volleyball experience.

  • If you are an incoming freshmen or a returning JV player that is unsure of your level, please let Coach Chen know so that he can give you some idea of where you stand.  In general, up until the roster is  finalized, Varsity workouts are open to anyone with the appropriate volleyball ability.

  • If you plan on trying out for Varsity, please email Coach Chen at echen@alamedaunfied.org.  If you are an incoming freshmen, also be sure to fill out the Encinal Women's Volleyball Info Form located above.

  • If there are days you need to miss in order to tryout for a different sport, please let the Coach know at the beginning of tryouts.
  • If you are an incoming freshmen, also be sure to fill out the Encinal Women's Volleyball Info Form located above.

Encinal Volleyball Goals and Values

Team First.  Play as a team and practice good sportsmanship.  Every member of the team is valued for their contributions to the program.

Respect.  Respect the ROOTS of the game.  Rules, Opponents, Officials, Team, and Self.

Love the game.  Have fun learning, working hard, and putting forth your best effort.  Love the challenge that the game brings to you.

Practice and Play at a competitive level to prepare for the next level.  Always try your hardest in practice and in games.  Work to be a better player and person at every practice.

Balance academics with athletics.  Successes on the court and in the classroom go hand in hand.  A successful athlete can manage the commitment between sports and school work.

Encinal Varsity and JV Volleyball teams

We have both Varsity and Junior Varsity teams. JV is typically comprised of freshmen and sophomores while Varsity has mostly juniors and seniors, although freshmen and sophomores are also on the team.  Ultimately, the goal of the JV program is to lay the foundation for the game so that players can compete successfully at the Varsity level.

The season starts at the beginning of the school year, with the JV and Varsity regular season ending the first week of November, with Varsity potential playing till the end of November in the post-season.  The team practices 2 hours every day after school during the season.
