Kate Belden

A Bay Area native, I've traveled the world pretty extensively yet I've never found anywhere that compares with Northern California. The food, the culture, the open-mindedness, the vitality, the weather - the foggy Bay has a magnetic pull on me. Books set in Northern California always hook me - Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, A Visit from the Goon Squad, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius...Steinbeck, of course.

Teaching/Educational Philosophy

I believe I fail when I bore my students. I believe that a well-formed argument is beautiful. I approve of strange thoughts and new interpretations. I want students to feel powerful and innovative. I seek to pique curiosity not satisfy it. I hope that if I treat students as partners in learning, they'll respond with investment, engagement, and maturity.
